Austin’s Yellow Bike Project (YBP) is seeking an experienced bicycle mechanic to join our staff team.

We are looking for an experienced bicycle mechanic who will repair bicycles for use in our various donation programs and for retail sales, be an ambassador for YBP and its services, support the operation of our retail shop, interact with customers and community members, and support education programs and other duties in support of our mission. This Bicycle Mechanic position works at our bike shop in East Austin, at 1216 Webberville Rd, 78721.

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Bicycle Mechanic is responsible for supporting the mission of the Yellow Bike Project. This includes assessing and repairing donated bicycles for use in donation programs and for sale. This also includes assisting customers with choosing parts and accessories, as well as supporting our various production, outreach, and education programs.  Under the supervision of the staff manager, the Bicycle Mechanic will work to consistently and efficiently deliver on the demands presented by our customers and programming efforts. This position requires technical proficiency, attention to detail, the ability to multitask, and to be an ambassador for the Yellow Bike Project.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assess and repair bicycles for retail sale and for use in our various donation programs
• Educate customers and volunteers about the operation and maintenance of bicycles
• Educate community members about YBP services and how to get involved
• Assist customers with the purchase of bikes, parts, and accessories
• Help the shop run smoothly- answer phones, maintain a safe, clean & organized workspace, etc.
• Work cooperatively with the rest of the team to meet the goals set forth by the staff manager and board of directors
• Moving & lifting bicycles up to 50 lbs. is a regular part of this job but reasonable accommodation can be made
• Participate and assist with various educational and outreach programs, which may involve off-site activities
• Assist in hosting corporate team-building events

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ideal candidate has 3+ years of experience working in a bike shop
• Consistent attention to quality and detail
• Ability to meet quantitative production goals
• Effective communication skills
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment
• Expectation to be on one’s feet most of the day
• Be willing to tolerate heat, cold, minor chaos, and gross stuff
• Ability to be patient with challenging customers and shop-users, giving respect and courtesy to each person. 
• Commitment to and respect for equity, sustainability and diversity
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to use it (experience with trailers is a plus)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Proficiency in ASL
• Proficiency in Spanish strongly desired 

PAY RATE & BENEFITS:

SCHEDULE:  Full or part time, weekend work expected

COMPENSATION:  $20.00 hourly, raised to $21.00 after 90 day probationary period

BENEFITS: Paid holidays (6 holiday days per year), generous PTO, and Family Leave (8 weeks for birth / adoption of child or other caregiving obligations)
