Austin’s Yellow Bike Project (YBP) is seeking an experienced bicycle mechanic who will repair bicycles for use in our various donation programs, maintain contacts with our partner organizations, manage off-site bike giveaway events, keep up a database, and perform regular shop floor duties. This position works at our bike shop in East Austin, at 1216 Webberville Rd, 78721.

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
Our “Get A Free Bike” program is a key part of our operation; we work with local nonprofits to identify people in need of transportation, and we provide them with free bikes, locks, lights, and helmets.
The “Get A Free Bike” Coordinator is responsible for supporting the mission of the Yellow Bike Project, specifically by managing the flow of outgoing donation bikes.This includes assessing and repairing donated bicycles for use in donation programs, as well as tracking bikes and clients using our Monday.com database. Also included in the duties are managing periodic bike giveaways, off-site, which can mean organizing and scheduling volunteers and vehicles. Under the supervision of the manager, the “Get A Free Bike” Coordinator will work to consistently and efficiently deliver on the demands presented by our community partners and programming efforts. This position requires technical proficiency, attention to detail, the ability to multitask, and to be an ambassador for the Yellow Bike Project.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assess and repair bicycles for use in our various donation programs
- Manage the database for tracking outgoing bikes and clients
- Manage and schedule off-site bike giveaway events
- Engage in outreach and cultivate connections with our community partners
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Educate customers and volunteers about the operation and maintenance of bicycles
- Educate community members about YBP services and how to get involved
- Assist customers with the purchase of bikes, parts, and accessories
- Help the shop run smoothly- answer phones, maintain a safe, clean & organized workspace, etc.
- Work cooperatively with the rest of the team to meet the goals set forth by the manager and board of directors
- Moving & lifting bicycles up to 50 lbs. is a regular part of this job but reasonable accommodation can be made
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ideal candidate has 3+ years of experience working in a bike shop
- Ability to manage database software, currently we use Monday.com
- Consistent attention to quality and detail
- Ability to meet quantitative production goals
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment
- Expectation to be on one’s feet most of the day
- Be willing to tolerate heat, cold, minor chaos, and gross stuff
- Ability to be patient with challenging customers, clients, and shop-users, giving respect and courtesy to each person.
- Commitment to and respect for equity, sustainability and diversity
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to use it (experience with trailers is a plus)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proficiency in Spanish strongly desired
- Proficiency in ASL
PAY RATE & BENEFITS:
SCHEDULE: Full time, weekend work expected
COMPENSATION: $21.00 hourly, raised to $22.05 after 90 day probationary period
BENEFITS: Paid holidays (6 holiday days per year), generous PTO, and Family Leave (8 weeks for birth / adoption of child or other caregiving obligations)
