Earn-A-Bike program

Earn your bike

While learning basic bike mechanics and building bikes for Austin’s vulnerable communities identified by our community partners. No bike repair experience is necessary, but diligence, patience, and the ability to work independently with minimal instruction are highly recommended.

Your bike is only 2 steps away:

STEP 1: Volunteer

Volunteer a minimum of 12 hours, while completing your skills checklist at either Open, Volunteer, or Women/Trans/Femme Workshops (if applicable).

Ser voluntario un mínimo de 12 horas, mientras completas tu lista de control de aptitudes en los talleres abiertos, de voluntariado o de mujeres/trans/mujeres (si procede).

Check our Calendar for dates and availability.

STEP 2: Build your bike!

Receive a pre-owned bike and put your new bicycle skills into practice. You’ll have continued access to our shop resources during our Open Workshops to help you complete your bike project successfully. If you need a more personal approach in choosing and building your “earned” bike, sign up for the Earn-A-Bike: Part II.

Please keep in mind that our storage space is limited, so please take your “earned” bicycle home if you can and bring it with you when you plan on working on it during either OPEN WORKSHOPS or Earn-A-Bike: Part II.

VIDEO TUTORIALS

If you would like to learn on your own or just need a refresher course without having to come
into our shop, we have assembled a catalog of instructional videos. This LINK will take you to a
page with the major systems of a bike and they in turn will link you to a page for each of the
subsystems.
