April / May Volunteer Update

Volunteers are crucial for Yellow Bike to help us fulfill our mission. Our volunteers get the chance to apply the skills they already have to benefit their community, learn new skills, and build new relationships with fellow volunteers and staff. Volunteer tasks at Yellow Bike are varied, ranging from wrenching on donation bikes to online work and teaching others about bikes.

In April 2023, 87 volunteers dedicated over 600 volunteer hours to Yellow Bike. About half of those hours were spent building up adult and kids donation bikes. With the help of our staff and volunteers, we finished 55 donation bikes in April that went to 14 local social service partners who distribute the bikes to those in need. If you would like to help us build more bikes to donate, come volunteer at a community workshop. We had seven community workshop hosts and three workshop apprentices run 18 open, volunteer, and WTF community workshops.

We had seven community workshop hosts and three workshop apprentices run 18 open, volunteer, and WTF community workshops. We have been operating with a very small number of volunteer community workshop hosts over the past couple of years. Ideally, we would like to have three times as many people hosting shops each month, which would mean we can open our shop for community use more often. If you are interested in becoming a workshop host apprentice, ask a Yellow Bike staff or coordinator about it next time you’re at the shop, or send an email to the Community Workshop Committee Chair to find out more.
