Yellow Bike Project Staff Mechanic Position

Mission: The Austin Yellow Bike Project 501c(3) is a volunteer-powered initiative to put bicycles on the streets of Austin and Central Texas by operating a community bike shop, teaching bike mechanics and maintenance, and acting as a local bike advocacy group. The purpose of the paid staff operation, carried out by the Yellow Bike Project Workers’ Collective, is to expand the services that the YBP Volunteer Collective is able to deliver to the the community at large.

 

YBP seeks a full time mechanic to assist in the daily refurbishing of used bikes intended for sale to the public. We are a democratic workplace that values self motivated individuals with strong listening and communication skills, a love for bikes and making things new again, and a chill attitude.

 

Tasks (including but not limited to)

  • Repair donated bikes (mostly used) to YBP Workers’ Collective standards for sale to the public
  • Assist customers shopping for bikes or parts
  • Perform all point-of-sale and money handling functions
  • Describe YBP’s mission and programming to visitors and communicate offers or requests to the YBP Volunteer Collective as appropriate
  • Receive incoming donations
  • Maintain inventory of new parts and place wholesale orders
  • Participate in worker self-management and consensus decision-making
  • Help Austin’s largest and oldest community bike shop continue to thrive

 

Qualifications: There are three essential requirements of all workers. One, a basic understanding of bicycle mechanics. Two, experience in or having a strong interest in horizontal organizations and consensus decision making. And the third, an ability, interest and willingness to learn new skills and communicate effectively. All work and volunteer experience as a bicycle mechanic or with self-management, consensus decision-making, non-profits, collectives, or cooperatives is a plus.

 

Expectations:

  • Workers must express a desire and dedication to work cooperatively, as well as a commitment to the collective process.
  • Workers must be respectful of each other’s time, space, and person, the YBP Volunteer Collective’s mission, policies, and desires, and the shop space itself and the community members that utilize its resources.
  • Workers must be both punctual and reliable in carrying out the business duties associated with the Workers’ Collective, including follow-through on any special tasks that they have taken on.
  • Workers must be able to work productively on their own, as well as be able to take initiative on new projects. Good time management is a must.
  • Workers must learn which decisions can be made on their own, and which ones require collective input (worker and volunteer) –although when in doubt, it is better to err on the side of collective decision-making.
  • Workers must also be willing to engage in a conflict resolution process to resolve disputes and address grievances.
  • Workers must be willing to give and receive constructive criticism from their fellow workers and participate in periodic performance reviews.
  • Workers must possess basic computer and math skills; experience with Google Drive and social media platforms is a plus.
  • Workers must be able and willing to lift 50 lbs repeatedly.
  • Workers must be able and willing to be on their feet for most of the day.
  • Workers must be able and willing to withstand heat, cold, rude customers, minor chaos and gross stuff.
  • Workers must be able to make a long term commitment. The YBP Workers’ Collective is looking for committed individuals. Collective building and training takes time.

Compensation: Pay is $15.25/hr. YBP also offers benefits including sick and vacation, discounts on parts, shop access, and more!
