Yellow Bike News for November 2013

Holiday Hours

Hope y’all are enjoying some crisp autumn rides this November. Early sunsets, the wind on your handlebars, and sweatshirts on the shop floor are indicators that the holidays are right around the corner. We’d like to remind you that time off is good for self, family, friendship, and bicycle rides, and that the Yellow Bike Project will be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 28, and on Friday, November 29 to celebrate digestion and Buy Nothing Day.

Bikes Across Borders

Winter’s approach also means that our friends and allies at Bikes Across Borders are gearing up for another caravan. Each year, BXB builds international cycling solidarity by fixing up some bikes, riding them to Mexico, and donating their transportation to the community organizers they meet there. BXB is currently seeking participants interested in joining this January’s migration. To sign up or find out more, visit BXB’s Facebook page.

Satisfying Service

We were excited to start out the month by riding with some students from Austin Montessori School on their inaugural Day of Service. Kids learned how a volunteer-powered community bike shop works, then pushed pedals around the neighborhood, sweeping bike lanes and reporting road hazards. Sounds like they learned that giving back can be a blast, a lesson we never get sick of teaching.

Swanky Sale Bikes

Our first few weeks of Daytime Hours have been going great. Our expanded hours have seen lots of generous donations arriving to be given another bicycle-life, and lots of folks pedaling away on freshly refurbished rides. Along with a nice selection of simple, inexpensive commuters, we’ve still got a few extra-fancy stand-outs on the sale rack. Full-carbon road racer? Dual suspension trail slayer? Handcrafted British steel? These aren’t the kind of bikes you’ll always find for sale at YBP, but you can find them right now, waiting for the right rider. If you haven’t seen our selection in a while, now’s the time to take a look.
