Webberville Shop is Now Open! - To usher in this new era we had several commemorative events. On Wednesday April 28th we held a ribbon cutting ceremony where Volunteer Jennifer Schaffer, City Bike Program Manager Annick Beaudet, and Council members Laura Morrison and Chris Riley gave a few words on what the project means for Austin. On Saturday May 1st we held a Grand Opening Party complete with shop tours, a christening of the building, and BBQ by BMF Cooks. Thanks to everyone who made this a reality. Check our schedule page for our first shop schedule.

The Dream - We are looking forward to creating a hub for the Austin bicycling community. The site will host our regular free workshops as well as expanded daytime operations, summer camps, flexible meeting space open to the cycling community, and community gardens.

About the site - The site is located at the intersections of 12th Street, Webberville Road and Springdale Road next to Simms Elementary. All three roads have major bike lanes, which we took to be a sign. The front 1/3rd of the lot facing Webberville has a small forest where we plan to setup a picnic table and outdoor meeting space. The rest of the grounds not occupied by the building will be developed into community gardens and landscaped to do justice to a 100 year home.

About the building - We will construct a 3000 sq ft. warehouse much like our old facility on 51st street. We will abut our building to an existing 1000 sq ft. slab that will serve as additional storage. With the generous support of several volunteer architects we have designed the space to be as comfortable as possible using passive heating/cooling and day-lighting techniques. The southern wall of the workshop area will open up in the warm months giving plenty of air flow and allowing us to work outside.

FINANCING - After learning that our arrangement with the city prevented us from taking out conventional loans because we will have no collateral, Yellow Bike kicked off a micro-loan program to raise the rest of our projected construction costs.  We're asked supporters of YBP's mission and who has some cash in the bank to loan it out to YBP and literally build community in the form of the new YBP headquarters.  The terms were to repay the loan within 5 years, and give a better deal than you can get in your savings account at the bank at 3% interest.  We thought it would be a way to put your money to a good use, then get it back - plus interest!  We raised 100k through microloans for the project and will pay them back over the course of the next 5 years. For more details visit our Microloan page.

We need your help - To make the shop a reality we are calling on friends of Yellow Bike to provide volunteers, materials, and funds. Read below to see how you can help.

Volunteers - We will need volunteers at every step of creating our new shop. If you are interested in relocating our shop by bike, creating shop storage solutions, painting murals, landscaping, or laying concrete forms for good causes we would love your help. Sign-up here and let us know how you can help.

Human Powered Move Part II - 2.4 miles, 11 years of bike parts...
On Saturday June 21st 10am once again we will attempt to move a Yellow Bike shop with human power. We will be moving every bike, bike part, tool, and work stand in the 51st street shop to our new site at 1200 Webberville. (read more...)
