Apprentice

Volunteer coordinators are the lifeblood of the YBP; the more coordinators we have, the more hours the shop can be open, and the more classes we can offer.  Coordinators commit on a monthly basis to open the shop at a specified time each week and help anyone who comes through the doors with their biking needs.

Apprenticing involves a few steps and is self-paced.

  • The fist step is to become a Collective Member. Simply come to the shop whenever we’re open and volunteer; this will help you learn where things are in the shop, acquire some basic mechanics skills, and get a feel for the shop culture.  You can opt to start attending collective meetings at this time.
  • After completing your 24 hours of volunteer time, come to a meeting to  introduce yourself as a new collective member, and let us know you are interested in becoming  an Apprentice Coordinator.  As an apprentice you will attend an orientation and coordinator training workshops.  You will also sign up to attend a specific open shop each week where you will learn the in’s and out’s of running a shop.
  • Finally, once you have mastered mechanical and procedural skills, talk with the coordinators you’ve been working with the most to determine if they think you’re ready to become a coordinator.  If so, they will nominate you for approval as a full coordinator at the next collective meeting.
