Newsletter - March 2009

Dear supporters of Yellow Bike,

Welcome to this months exciting newsletter, packed full of critical information.  Read on for the details:

NEW HEADQUARTERS IS GO! -  We've cleared another set of hurdles in the site development process for our new Main Shop facility at E.12th and Webberville Rd.  We're hoping to celebrate Bike Month this year with a ground-breaking ceremony sometime in May.  Stay tuned. If you're wondering how you can make sure our new shop gets built and running as rapidly as possible, read on for how to contribute to our New Headquarters Fund while enjoying live music or getting a cool tee in the process.  Visit the Webberville page on our website for more information.

MARCH 8th BENEFIT SHOW - Colin and Zoe, two local high school students, decided the best way to contribute to our New Headquarters Fund would be to book an awesome show with some of their favorite bands and then donate the proceeds to YBP.  We like the way they think.  Come to the Mohawk this Sunday to enjoy the fruits of their labor.  Oh No Oh My, Follow That Bird!, The Tastydactyls, The El Guapos, For Hours and Ours, DJ JD and DJ Sleuth will be making music from 4 - 10pm.  The show is all ages (of course), $5 for 21+ and $7 for under 21.

MARCH 14th PARTY/BENEFIT - Our friends at The Compound (1300 E. 4th) are hosting a benefit for us from 1pm 'til midnight on Saturday, March 14 (See cool poster to the right).  The afternoon will feature various contests of cycling agility and in the evening Quick Release, Seals & The Wingless Angels, George Fox and Pong will leave all worlds rocked.  The event is all ages and BYOB with a suggested donation of $10 (most of which will go to Yellow Bike!).

imageimageYELLOW SHIRT PROJECT - Limited edition art shirts are available through local bike shops and from yellowshirtproject.com.  See the website for details. The designs are fresh, the shirts are $25 and proceeds go to the New Headquarters Fund.  Did I mention Bearded Lady printed them? This month's shirt comes from Paul Fucik of the Decoder Ring Design Concern.

AUSTIN CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES' FORUM - On Monday, March 23, YBP, along with Austin Cycling Association (ACA) and League of Bicycling Voters (LOBV), is sponsoring a Candidate's Forum at 301 E. 8th Sreet (corner of 8th and San Jacinto | map) from 6 to 9pm.  Last year the Forum on Cycling and Pedestrian issues was among the most well attended candidate forums and we hope to make this year even better.  There are actually 5 council seats up for grabs, so the stakes are high. You can help these candidates understand the concerns of Austin cyclists and pedestrians while also emphasizing how politically engaged our community is by attending this event.  See you there!

BIKE RIDE FOR AUTISM AWARENESS -  On March 29, 2009, the Autism Society of Greater Austin will be hosting it's 2nd annual fund raising event, the Austin Autism Bike Ride 2009.  Check out www.austinautismbikeride.org for more information on the event.

21ST STREET BIKE PROJECT NEWS- We're excited to add the 21st Street Bike Project to our schedule section this month.  The 21st Street shop is located at 707 W. 21st ST (@the 21st ST CO-OP | map).  They are currently hosting two open shops a week and have plans for a building expansion project come spring.  Visit the 21st Street webpage to donate and find other ways to help expand their shop.  Organized along the same lines as YBP, they welcome volunteers and donations of bikes and parts.  Drop by one of their open shops to check out their operation or contact coopbikeshop@yahoo.com for more info.  Also on Facebook!

BIKE MONTH NEEDS VOLUNTEERS-  May is Bike Month, a month long celebration of cycling.  Bike Month is a collaborative effort for the benefit of all cyclists and this year we are producing a “Bike Month Magazine” to promote cycling, spotlight all cycling related businesses and organizations, report on major programs such as Bike To Work Week, The Commuter Challenge, and The Bicycle Master Plan, plus a calendar for all the great events, rides, and parties happening in May.  Russell, the Bike Month Coordinator, is hosting Bike Month Brunch meetings every Sunday at 11 am at his home in South Austin.  Everyone is invited.  Come get fed and volunteer.  Please email bikemonth@austincycling.org for more details or to get your event information published.

TREASURE CITY SHOP NEWS - Shops are still going strong in the Treasure City parking lot East, five days a week, the transient, but still pumping heart of the Yellow Bike Project.  Open late on Fridays.   Please note we will be closed this Saturday March 7th so that all our shop coordinators can attend our annual retreat in Bastrop.  For more info on Treasure City events, see their website here.

YELLOW BIKE AT THE DOWNTOWN FARMER'S MARKET -   Les and James are manning our booth at the Downtown Farmer's Market every Saturday from 9am - 1pm.  While picking up your outstanding weekly food staples, stop by to wrench on your bike, buy a t-shirt or just get your YB fix.
