Newsletter - October 2006 Dear members of the Yellow Bike community, Here we go again. Enjoy this month of Yellow Bike News.-The Yellow Bike Project SCHEDULE - After a brief summer slowdown, the shop schedule is as busy as ever. Both locations are open five days a week in October. The hours at our main shop on East 51st Street are Monday to Friday, 6 – 10 pm. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are volunteer only and Thursday and Friday are open shops. This month at our volunteer shops, we're working on bikes for San Antonio Special Olympics and an upcoming elementary school donation. At open shops you can volunteer, get help repairing your own ride, or build up a bike of your own. The Wheatsville shop is open Sundays, 5 – 8 pm, Mondays, 5 – 9 pm, Tuesdays, 5 – 9 pm, Wednesdays, 4 -7 pm, and Thursdays, 6 – 9 pm. You can work on your on bike at any Wheatsville shop. However, due to space and tool/part limitations, Wheatsville shops are best utilized for minor repairs and overhauls.
* Red Hours indicate Volunteer Only Shop: Learn to fix bikes while giving back to YBP, earn a bike of your very own, or just help out. Personal projects during Open Shops shown in black on the schedule. YELLOW BIKE COLLECTIVE MEETS WITH THE UTC - With current Mueller redevelopment plans threatening the 51st Street shop, Yellow Bikers are sitting down with the Austin's Urban Transportation Commission at their October meeting to discuss continued support from the city. Possibilities include another city supported space or funding to find one. The meeting is on Monday, October 9th at 6:00 p.m. Stay tuned. BEDICHEK MIDDLE SCHOOL AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM - Our after school program through Citizen Schools is officially under way. Jessica Douglas and Stacia Bowley are working with 6th and 7th grade students to teach and learn basic bike mechanics. The students are keeping repair diaries that will be turned into a small bike repair manual that they can give to their peers when the semester ends in December. A bike safety rodeo where students from the class can check and adjust their peer's bikes is also in the works. KIDS ARE IN THE HOOD ON WEDNESDAYS - Kids in the Hood/Turn Your Back on Violence is a group working with youth in the area near our 51st Street location. Starting in October, they will be bringing young people to the shop from 5:30 to 7:30pm. For the first part of Wednesday shops, we'll be focusing on helping them learn the basics of bike maintenance and earn bikes of their own. Please be patient when showing up to volunteer or come to pitch in and help them learn. BEST OF AUSTIN 2006 - The Austin Chronicle, in their October 13, 2006 issue, named Austin's Yellow Bike Project the "Best way to get kids pumped about bikes" in the Critics Picks Kids category, as part of their annual Best of Austin listings. We believe the children are the future and are honored to be associated with them. For the full write-up, view this year's Best of Awards. This is not the first time the Chronicle has given its blessing for what we do. In the 1999 Best of Austin Issue we were named best Community Program.
