GREEN CITY FESTIVAL - Oct. 13 10a-4p at City Hall from
Saturday, October 13, the City of Austin will host its first Green City Festival from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at City Hall. Eleven City departments and 40 partnering non-profit organizations, including Yellow Bike, will provide a one-stop bonanza of green information wrapped in fun, music and interesting activities for the entire family. Everything you want to know about energy, water and resource efficiency will be on display. Enjoy educational talks, hands-on workshops and an interactive Kids Korner.

Tour de Fat - October 20th! - New Belgium Brewery's Tour de Fat is happening again in Austin on October 20th at Fiesta Gardens from 11am to 6pm. Proceeds from the event will go to three Austin area cycling groups: Yellow Bike Project, Austin Cycling Association, and Austin Ridge Riders. We need 150 volunteers to staff various aspects of the event from ID checking to tear down. Some positions require TABC certification, which New Belgium will pay for. Please email us at if you are interested in volunteering. This has been a large fundraising event in the past and we would love your help in pulling it off (read more about the Tour de Fat).

KILL-A-WATT CHALLENGE - The Austin Chronicle and Austin Energy are hosting a contest to see who can reduce their energy bills the most this summer. Renters will compete against renters, homeowners against homeowners, businesses against businesses, and neighborhoods against neighborhoods to win prizes all summer long (view list of prize contributors ).
Many of us tend to think of our driving habits when we think of our contribution to global warming, but in fact it's our electricity habit that accounts for 39% of our carbon-dioxide emissions, while transportation accounts for just 33%. While we can't help you win this summer by helping you get on a bike, we encourage you to sign-up to see how much of a difference you can make off the road.
Visit the Chronicle's Kill-a-watt Challenge page for details and sign-up .
Yellow Bike is supporting the contest with monthly prizes in the Neighborhood category. For the winners in the Neighborhood category for June, July, August and September, we will be hosting a private shop where residents of the neighborhood can come as a group to use the shop. They will have access to all of our shop services, tools and expertise to get their personal bikes repaired and ready for use this summer. |

2007-03-24 (Sat) 12pm-4pm - TREASURE CITY SATELLITE SHOP GRAND OPENING - Our new Treasure City Satellite Shop is finally open! We are open 3 days a week, on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday all this month. Our shop has 3 works stands and, as always, wonderful volunteers to h elp you with bike maintenance and repair.
We will have a Grand Opening at the shop on Saturday the 24th between Noon and 4pm. For the first two hours of the
event we will be matching around 35 neighborhood youths with bikes donated and overhauled as part of our ACA and REI supported Bikes to Schools Program. Each bike will come with safety gear, a helmet and a light set. The bikes will be adjusted to fit the kids who receive them.
For neighborhood kids who bring their own bikes to the shop , we will be giving away any extra helmets and lights on a first-come first-serve basis. We will also perform a safety check on their bicycles and make any adjustments necessary. Volunteers will be on hand to teach basic bike safety tips to the kids.
For the remainder of event, from 2pm - 4pm, the shop will be open for people to work on their bikes and tour the new shop. The shop is equipped for minor repairs like replacing brake cables, fixing flats and greasing bearings. Complete overhauls and multi-day projects are more easily accommodated at our Main Shop on 51st Street.
We would again like to thank everyone who helped out with the bike powered move (watch video ) and the setup of the new shop. We couldn't have done it without you. Please come to the Grand Opening or stop by during open hours and see the new shop!
HUMAN-POWERED SATELLITE SHOP MOVE SUCCESSFUL!! WATCH VIDEO - On Saturday January 27th, the contents of the Wheatsville satellite shop were stowed and transported on roughly 40 bicycles tricycles, bike trailers, panniers, and backpacks to the new Treasure City shop. In only 2.5 hours the entire contents of the shop had been packed, transported 3 miles (view map), and unloaded at the new shop. It is inspirational what 40 people with a few pedal machines can do in so little time. Deepest thanks to all participated in making the move possible. (View Event Page)
Megan, who helped with the move, made an excellent video chronicling the event. Thanks, Megan
