The Austin Yellow Bike Project (YBP) is a community supported ALL-VOLUNTEER 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing human-powered transportation for the people of Austin, running a community bike shop, and educating kids and adults.

Clown Dog Bikes 10th Birthday Party - Easter Sunday, April 4th, Red's Scoot Inn (1308 E. 4th St), 5pm. Music includes Free Range Bastards, Woodgrain, Eastside Alcohol, and others to be determined. Proceeds to benefit YBP.

Last month for the Monroe Shop! - We will be moving out of the Monroe shop at the end of February to make room for SXSW festivities. Because our Webberville shop will be open shortly we have decided to focus all of our energies there. We are thankful to the Austin Musicians' Health Clinic that provided the space since August.

Treasure City Shop Closed - Treasure City Thrift Store is relocating to 2943 E 12th Street this month so we will be moving our shipping container to Webberville to prepare for the opening of our new shop. We are going to send all of the parts and bikes currently located at our Treasure City shop to Monroe to bolster supplies there. The new Webberville shop should open in the next few months.

2009 Limited Edition Fundraising Tee Shirt Series - For the rest of this year we will be releasing a new monthly tee that will feature designs from one of a dozen highly respected local and national printmakers whose work can be seen here. Each Shirt is a limited edition stamped from 1 through 99 and all proceeds will go to the Yellow Bike Headquarters Fund. This is a great way to commemorate your contribution toward realizing the positive future of cycling in Austin. Visit the www.YellowShirtProject.com for full details.

Building up at Webberville - The Webberville Shop now has a roof, walls, insulation and windows. They are working on framing out the bathrooms and finishing the plumbing and electric. We anticipate that our contractor will complete their work by mid January. That leaves the rest of the month for Yellow Bike volunteers to build the mezzanine, pergola, and deck out front. We estimate that we are only 4k short on funding. Chip in that last bit through a Donation or our Microlan Program. Stay tuned for opportunities to help out. View more pictures here.

YBP MICROLOAN PROGRAM $75k Raised and only $10k to go - After learning that our arrangement with the city will prevent us from taking out conventional loans because we will have no collateral, Yellow Bike kicked off a micro-loan program to raise the rest of our projected construction costs.  We're asking anyone who supports YBP's mission and who has some cash in the bank to loan it out to YBP and literally build community in the form of the new YBP headquarters.  We'll repay your loan within 5 years, and give you a better deal than you can get in your savings account at the bank at 3% interest.  Put your money to a good use, then get it back - plus interest!  For more details visit our Microloan page.

We did it ! - The lease is signed, the construction contract is signed, we have an approved site plan and between our cash and microloan pledges we have have the money we need to pay the construction contract.  We still want to raise another 10k through the microloan program for contingencies but we are on the home stretch. No joke.  And you know what else?  We've broken ground! Click here to view pictures.

ALL YBP SHOPS NOW AT OUR TREASURE CITY SATELLITE SHOP - As of July 1st, 2008, the 51st street shop is permanently closed.  The existing structure will be demolished in order to make way for a new road into theU Mueller Airport Redevelopment.  On June 21st, the bicycling community came out in droves to participate in the human powered move of the 51st street shop.  We moved the contents of the shop into storage at its new headquarters site at 1200 Webberville Rd.

In the meantime, we've expanded our hours and parts storage capacity at our small Treasure City Thrift location (In the yellow shed to the left of the thrift store), but won't have room to store bikes for folks to earn.  Hence, Earn-a-Bike will have to wait till our new shop opens. In the event of steady rain the Treasure City shop will be closed since most of the work area is outside and not weather protected. We are in the site development/construction process of building our new headquarters, and won't have a big warehouse shop space again until it is complete; we hope to have the Webberville shop up and running by Spring 2009.

HOPES DASHED FOR a "Professional" FUNDRAISER MAILOUT - We'd like to apologize for a printer error in our recent mailing (it actually wasn't the volunteers this time!); the printer put the wrong address on the return envelopes. Don't worry, though, that IS the address of a YBP board member and we WILL receive your checks! Please do use those return envelopes and make your check out to The Yellow Bike Project. Thank you for your understanding and support! Ride on!

Treasure City Shop Closed - Due to a code inspection issue, we must tear down the treasure city shed, which we will do on Saturday Jan 3rd. We will not resume shops until after we regroup at our collective meeting on Jan 6th. Future shops at Treasure City will be run out of our shipping container. Due to the severe lack of space for storage will will only be offering repair assistance but will not be able to accept bicycle donations and will have a limited supply of used parts. Stay posed for updates and shop hours.

HUMAN-POWERED SATELLITE SHOP MOVE SUCCESSFUL!! WATCH VIDEO - On Saturday January 27th, the contents of the Wheatsville satellite shop were stowed and transported on roughly 40 bicycles tricycles, bike trailers, panniers, and backpacks to the new Treasure City shop. In only 2.5 hours the entire contents of the shop had been packed, transported 3 miles (view map), and unloaded at the new shop. It is inspirational what 40 people with a few pedal machines can do in so little time. Deepest thanks to all participated in making the move possible.

Megan, who helped with the move, made an excellent video chronicling the event. Thanks, Megan

Think of it as an anatomy class for bikes, combined with a crash-course in open-heart cycle surgery.

WE NEED HELP! BECOME A COORDINATOR - This month due to several coordinators out on vacation we are only able to offer THREE SHOPS PER WEEK. We are increasingly in need of additional shop coordinators to allow us to accommodate new volunteers and help make their time at the shop productive and educational.  If you've been around the shop for a while and are feeling more comfortable with bike repair, you can help.  Here's how it works: read more...

SIGN UP FOR OUR BIKE REPAIR CLASS! (Four part class on Sundays in November from 5-8pm for $40) - Do you feel like our open shops are overwhelming? Crowded? Intimidating?  Looking for a calmer learning environment with a planned curriculum taught by our wonderful volunteer coordinators with attention to spare?  We think we have a solution!

CLASS IS FULL! - If you are interested in taking the class after the November session, send us an email with contact information and we will add you to the waiting list.

In November, we are offering a 4 part bike repair class on Sundays from 5-8pm.  The class will cover almost everything: repair basics; overhaul and repair of brakes, hubs, bottom brackets, and derailleurs; truing wheels; and road safety.  The class will be capped at 10 participants , which should feel like a private session compared to our 40-50 person open shops.  The cost of the 4 part class is $40, which will go to support the work of Yellow Bike.  Participants with perfect attendance will be rewarded with an Earn-a-Bike (your choice of used parts from our shop to build the bike of your dreams).  By the end of the course fixing up your Earn-a-Bike will be easy and fun!  To sign up for the class send us an email with your contact information.  We will contact you and send confirmation of enrollment once payment for the class is arranged.

BIKES ACROSS BORDERS COMMUNITY BIKE SHOP - Bikes Across Borders has maintained a long running community bike shop much like the ones we run.  Their large shop is an excellent and established resource for bike repair. We are posting the open hours of their shop on our website to increase the visibility and usage of their shop.  We love to see community bike resources and are happy to provide any assistance to make them successful. This shop is located to the East of Pleasant Valley near 4th street (view map).

THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE'S KILL-A-WATT CHALLENGE - The Austin Chronicle and Austin Energy are hosting a contest to see who can reduce their energy bills the most this summer. Renters will compete against renters, homeowners against homeowners, businesses against businesses, and neighborhoods against neighborhoods to win prizes all summer long.

Many of us tend to think of our driving habits when we think of our contribution to global warming, but in fact it's our electricity habit that accounts for 39% of our carbon-dioxide emissions, while transportation accounts for just 33%.

While we can't help you win this summer by helping you get on a bike, we encourage you to sign-up to see how much of a difference you can make off the road. Visit the Chronicle's Kill-a-watt Challenge page for details and sign-up.

HUMAN POWERED SATTELITE SHOP MOVE JANUARY 20TH! ALL INVITED - On Saturday January 20 we will be moving our Wheatsville Satellite shop to its new treasure city location. To get us ready for the imposing task of moving our 4,500 sq ft main shop later this year we have decided to move the 300 sq ft satellite shop entirely by human power. We will be moving every bike, bike part, tool, and work stand in the shop. Some of you might wonder why we would torcher ourselves with a feat like this when several of us own trucks that would make the task much easier. The answer is that 1) we like bikes and 2) we plan on having a great time doing it. So meet us at Wheatsville on at noon with your bicycle, tricycle, bike trailer, panniers, backpacks, bungie cords, or anything else you think might help out.

WE NEED A PERMANENT HOME: The Yellow Bike Project is looking for a secure, permanent, warehouse space so that we can continue the great work that we've been doing for the past 9 years. For the last 8 years, our space has been generously donated by the City of Austin; however, it is in an old airport building that is destined for demolition and redevelopment in the ongoing Mueller Airport Redevelopment. We have learned that we have until late 2007 to find a new home. Stay posted to learn more about how you can help to keep Yellow Bike one of the best community cycling resources around for years to come.

PEACOCK LOUNGE TO DONATE 10% SATURDAYS: Every Saturday the Peacock Lounge will be donating 10% of its bar sales to Yellow Bike with DJ John King will be providing the dance tunes. We will have a Yellow Bike release at the Peacock celebrating the first of the Saturdays (10/28).

AUSTIN BIKE CULTURE ARCHIVE: We have started an Austin Bike Culture Archive that anyone in the community can edit. The idea is to create a space that anyone can add text and pictures about austin bike events, rides, organizations... or anything else that seems to fit the theme. The more you contribute the better the archive so check it out, enjoy, and feel free to add you bit of bike culture.
